IOL: Veterinary ophthalmology helps animals with cataracts
10,000 to 12,000 lenses annually

S&V Technologies (Henningsdorf, Germany) specializes among other things in veterinary ophthalmology. The company manufactures both lenses and equipment for operations. 10,000 to 12,000 intraocular lenses (IOLs) for horses, dogs, cats and other animals are supplied by the company in Brandenburg every year. According to their own information they are the world market leader in this field with a market share of about fifty percent. The head of the company has worked on IOLs for humans for over 25 years and on IOLs for animals for several years. In the early days, large manufacturers of medical instruments were interested in developing such lenses and the related technology for operating on animals. However at that time the lenses for animals were thick and rather stiff and met with little success.
Since 2004 the CEO and the physicists and chemists in the company have been putting increasing effort into eye care for animals. They have developed an ultra-thin aqueous lens. For their patent on this they received the Berlin/Brandenburg Innovation Prize in 2001. Two years ago they sold the main company with 145 employees to Carl Zeiss Meditec GmbH but retained the veterinarian division, founding their current company right next door. Up to now there are only very few veterinary surgeons who have trained to carry out this specialized operating procedure. So the company is constantly working on ways to improve the technology and puts on in-house training courses for interested veterinarians twice a year. Participants come from all over the world, even from Japan, Taiwan and Australia.
